Khatu Shyam Ji is dedicated to Barbarika and was a great warrior from the Mahabharata, the grandson of Bhima and son of Ghatotkacha. It is widely believed that he is the reincarnation of Lord Krishna in the Kali Yuga. Adhering to his promise made to his mother, he served as the Savior of the defeated and sacrificed his head to Krishna. In return, Krishna was pleased, and he blessed him to be worshipped by the name Shyam in the Kali Yuga.

Why is the Khatu Shyam Temple famous?

Khatu Shyam Temple is famous as it is a dedicated pilgrimage site belonging to Barbarika, who is worshipped as another form of Lord Lrishna. Being a famous spot, it features the miraculous and retired head of Barbarika, which is definitely an attraction point for millions of devotees, especially during the Phalgun Mela, of which you must have heard.

    Khatu Shyam

Khatu Shyam Mandir was a miraculous discovery at the spot where the head of Barbarika was found, thereby increasing its fame. The main temple in Sikar, Rajasthan, is historically significant because its original structure dates back to 1027 AD.

History of Khatu Shyam: Our Haare ka Sahara

It is a local belief that Barbarika voluntarily offered his head to lord Krishna before getting involved in the battle. The former was blessed by the latter to be worshiped as Khatu Shyam Ji in the village of Khatu. He was given the power that anyone seeking his blessings would never return with vain hands. It is also believed that the then ruler of Khatu received instructions in a dream to build a temple and enshrine his head there.

He is also referred to as Sheesh ke Daani, or the Donor of the head, among his Devotees. He entails and fulfills all the wishes of his pilgrims who trust him wholeheartedly. Thus, he is also known as “Haare ke Sahara” or Helper of Losers.

    Mythological Background and Connection

Khatu Shyam, or Barbarika, was an expendable warrior who possessed three divine arrows capable of estimating the outcome of the Kurukshetra War. Lord Krishna, disguised as a Brahmin, tested his fairness and resolve. He was then to sacrifice his head as an act of charity.
